View Full Version : Building a DVD/Video Library

Alistair

When DVD's first came out in 96-97, I got lazy going to movie theaters. I bougt me a DVD player and rented (sometimes bought) movies from movie rental outlets sp I can watch these movies in the comfort of my home.
Lately I've never been to the movies. I don;t think I'll ever go there.

If you do the math, buying the DVD movie saves you more than going to the theaters. Plus, you can watch the same movie anytime you like.

Is there anyone here who can recommend some good movies? It doesn't have to be the new ones. Any movie that you've seen in the past that you think it's a good movie.

I'm trying to build my video library. At last count, I have collected about a hundred movies. Exclude there some of the movies that some of my friends borrowed and never returned.

Any recommendations? :)

What's your preferrence?
Action, Fiction, Drama, (etc)?

I really like Final Destination.
It's a Suspense/Fiction about people's destiny.

Alistair

I already have Final Destination, including Final Destination 2.

Special Effects in 2 is awesomely true.

So you are collecting, too!
Consider the following:

- Men Of Honor (R. De Niro/Cuba Gooding Jr.)
- A Civil Action (John Travolta)
- Towering Inferno (sort of old but a really good one)
- Philadelphia (Tom Hanks/Denzel Washington)

Final Destination (1/2) are really good ones but a little too graphic. I loved it though!

Here's another good one.
I was supposed to watch Monday Night Football but neither Eagles nor Miami is my team. I just watched "Suicide Kings" instead. It's good. Also add "The Heist" to your library. So much twists that you wouldn't know how it will end.
2 thumbs!!!

- Unfaithfull (Diane Lane, Richard Gere)
- Malice (Nicole Kidman, Alec Baldwin)
- Final Analysis (R. Gere)

Try also (suspense) "The Firm" , T. Cruise.
Few Good Men, lots of courtroom drama

I rented the movie American Adobo yesterday and what a surprise!!!

As usual, lots of torrid kissing scenes the part that really amazed me was the fact that the casts used the "f" word so many times in the movie.

For a movie that I thought was "for the family" - in fact my first impression was something of a comedy film judging by its title" - it was the exact opposite.

If you ever rent this, don't watch with your kids around. Even a quasi-comedy American film doesn't use such foul languages.

I should have known. It was rated "R".

Now you're talking - I mean, reviewing a movie
But you are right, it would have have been better if they didn't use those "F" words. At least, even our children who were born here coud watch it too and pick up some nice Filipino traditions and traits and even learn how to cook adobo. Right?

I did a search at Blockbuster.com for that american adobo and they have it.
I am interested but before I do buy it, I'd like to make sure that they use english in their dialogues/conversation, or perhaps there's a an english subtitle.
Can you confirm this Anakin? Thanks!

I hate these guys! They used to send my sister so much junk mails (for CD's cassette tapes). You'd think their merchandise are so cheap - which is true - for the first few months/years - but overtime, they are going to make money outta you: membership fees and some other things they wanted you to intentionally miss on those very fine prints.
My sister junk 'em. Thanks for the input though, Cupid

The DVD video signal is of digital quality.
You are trying to record from a digital source to an analog format (VHS).

Could it be because of the copyright protection embedded on DVD discs?

no problem. :D

i'd like to reiterate that Columbia House does not charge membership fees. and to avoid these unwanted shipments/packages in your mailbox, just pick up the phone or log on to your account and decline the upcoming shipment, which they call "Director's Selection".

the four DVDs that you have to buy at regular price is costly. it's usually about $10.00 more expensive compared to other retailers, but after you fulfill this obligation that's when you start enjoying the benefits. where can you buy new dvd movies for less than $12 shipped? :D

With the advent of HD-DVD's & Blu-Rays hovering us, it seems like the library we built is illogical now. Then again, who would have thought that there will be something better than (standard) DVD back then? It's probably not as bad as the VHS/Beta war because these next-gen technology is backwards-compatible - meaning you still can play your standard DVD's on Blu-ray/HD-DVD player - but it won't be as clear as the new Hi-def dics.

But what happens if the technology that follows Blu-Ray/HD-DVD won't be backwards-compatible? How are you going to play your movie library?

I know... it's a question that cannot be answered probably until the imminent death of HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, whichever emerged victorious. But with technology changing faster than you can download a Led Zep song, there will always be something better than the old one. It's a fact of life.

That's why there's NetFlix (http://www.netflix.com/Register) :hb:

I GUESS THE BEST BET FOR NOW IS TO GET THE COMPROMISE MACHINE BY LG THAT CAN PLAY BOTH BLU-RAY AND HD DVD. IT DRILLS YOUR POCKET WITH ITS PRESENT PRICE IN THE STORES BUT IF IT IS YOUR HILIG, YOU'LL GET IT SOMEHOW. THE PRICE WILL COME DOWN, I'M SURE BUT IT TAKES A WHILE.
