THE SAMIWENG Singers of Ilocos Norte National High School are
set to compete next month in the International Choir Competition to
be held here in the Philippines for the first time on August 18-22.
The Samiweng Singers passed a screening and qualified for the
children’s category ages 17 and below.
Sherween Cabrales, INNHS teacher and coach for the international
competition said they sent an audio recording performance of
the school choir last March for the audition and they passed the
screening.
To prepare for the competition, all choir members train daily from
5-6:30 pm with Cabrales as coach and under the direction of Robert
Caluya.
Cabrales said the INNHS Samiweng Singers will represent Laoag City as well as the whole country in the said tilt.
He added that although they expect international choral groups, they
are not certain with the number of participants coming from other countries.
He expressed hopes that with the city government, the Laoag Department
of Education as well as the people of Ilocos Norte through prayers,
moral and financial support they would “bring home the bacon.”
Cabrales disclosed further that the problems they are facing now are
mostly financial—from uniforms, accommodation and fare among others.
Cabrales thanked INNHS principal Isabel Sandi for being supportive
as the INNHS head also vowed to try her best to find funding for the
group and to get in touch with Laoag Mayor Michael V. Fariñas for support
from the city government and the city DepEd.
He added that this would be the first time that INNHS will be joining
an international choir competition.
The said competition would be held in line with the 40th anniversary of
the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).
Meanwhile, Laoag City schools division superintendent Araceli Pastor
congratulated the INHHS choir for passing the screening as she promised
to support the group.
However, she said she finds the financial funding to be very high
which is why she plans to meet with members of the school board for
possible help in the funding with the assistance of the Laoag City government.
Pastor has asked the INNHS choir coaches to give a detailed amount
for them to know the exact figure so all of them would know how much and
what portion would be given.
In a related development, INNHS is also set to compete in the National
Music Culture for Young Artists (NAMCYA) vocal solo competition.
According to Cabrales, INNHS is set to submit video footage for four
representatives in the vocal solo competition for the regional level. Should
they pass this, they will qualify for the Tri-Regional Competition set in
September. The Tri-Regional competition includes Regions I, II, III and the
Cordillera Administrative Region. Winners in the Tri-Regional tilt automatically qualify for the NAMCYA scheduled on November 11-15 at the CCP. NAMCYA competitions include rondalla, music ensembles, vocal solo,
piano and junior ballet.
