Here's another Ilocano who's making waves in US politics:
http://eidanetsolutions.com/manayan/img/manayan_cityhall.jpg
FOR Henry Manayan, the glass is always half full, not half empty. In tackling the fiscal woes of California, he says the correct approach is to look into opportunities for expanding resources, instead of focusing on the lack of it.
This underpins his bid for the California State Assembly.
Manayan seeks to represent the 20th district composed mostly of Silicon Valley communities like Fremont, Newark, Union City, Milpitas and San Jose, as well as Pleasanton, Castro Valley and Hayward. His vision for the future is economic development by harnessing the golden state?s multicultural diversity to create opportunities for jobs and growth.
That?s niche marketing applied to governance. Nothing new for the venture capitalist who steered Milpitas, Calif. from its farming roots into the high-tech world of Silicon Valley.
The son of an Ilocano surgeon and a Chinese nurse, Manayan made his mark in California politics as the mayor who brought big business into Milpitas, allowing the city to ride the crest of the technology wave. It was during his tenure that Cisco, Sony, Veritas and Macronix set up shop there. Business parks came into being, as did the Great Mall, and a new City Hall that evoked what Milpitas had become ? a sophisticated and well-planned community.
In fact, Milpitas was in such state of boom that traffic jams and housing became problematic. True to form, Manayan did not fret. Instead, he made it attractive for companies to build affordable housing projects.
This eventually led to the sprouting of such residential enclaves within the city. He also recognized that the only way to ease gridlock was to expand access roads and mass transit systems. The 237/880 Interchange, Tasman Overpass and the Dixon Landing Overpass were thus added to the Milpitas scenery.
In an interview with Philippine News, Manayan said his motivation to seek the 20th district seat is to ?see things done on a larger scale,? especially for the 1.2 million Filipinos living in California.
?It?s an opportunity to break the glass ceiling. The first time we?ll be major players in the nation,? he said. And since California is home to 35 million people, its representation is also ?most influential.?
This prospect is not lost to the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (Naffaa), which is helping Manayan radiate fund-raising efforts nationwide through the Internet. Just a few weeks into his campaign, Manayan has raised some $25,000. By the end of the month, that figure should hit $100,000. The overall requirement is from $400,000 to half a million.
Manayan considers campaigning to be a ?part-time job? at this time ? it being done mostly in the evenings after a workday filled with business meetings that start at 7:30 a.m.
But it is during those community meetings that he gets a sense of what is to come. Which is why he is unfazed by outgoing 20th District Assemblyman John Dutra?s endorsement of another candidate. After all, apart from the endorsements of U.S. Congressman Mike Honda, San Francisco County Supervisor Pete McHugh, and Assemblyman Leland Yee, he perceives a groundswell of grassroots support for his candidacy.
He says the meetings ? be they with the FilAm community, the Chinese, Indians, or Vietnamese ? boost his spirit because of the positive encouragement that goes all around.
Manayan was born in Bronx, N.Y. and grew up in Hawaii, before moving to the Silicon Valley when he attended the Santa Clara University School of Law to earn his juris doctorate. He has served public office in Milpitas since 1994 when he was elected to the City Council.
He was mayor of Milpitas from 1996 to 2002.
With the support of the ilocanos of Cali - I know Manayan will make it. Just hang in there, Henry!

That's something Bbm...and even all those who did not qualify to the top ten....they were all winners in their own way...cause it takes lots of.. guts, courage, patience, money etc... to be in these pagents...and they are all beautiful... :)
true. You have no place in beauty pageants if you don't have confidence, guts, wits and patience.
BB-M: Naunahan ba? hehehe. Sorry about that.

one of the most affordable business that anyone can put up is an online business, which is unlike having a physical business where you have to deal with warehousing, inventory, shipping/recieving and so on. i've been doing this for more than 3 yrs now and i average on a slow day about $250 - $750 and on a good day, average of $750 - $1350 - THAT'S IN A DAY, imagine how much is that. eversince i started i haven't worked a day in my life and i just spent no more than 2 hours in front of my computer to check my earnings.
now i'm bringing you all this opportunity to bring about your life and stop doing hard labor just to earn a small amount to keep bringing food to the table. would you choose to wake up really early in the morning and spent 8 to 10 hours or maybe more on your job being bossed around by a mean supervisor, or do what i'm doing and earn substantially and stop working for someone else and be your own boss. you decide...
visit http://www.e-bizprofessionals.com
and in case you think you can't do it... don't worry, there's another way for you to earn.. we offer $15 per paid referral, NO CAPITAL NEEDED, JUST YOUR TIME. visit our site and go to our referral page and you figure out what you have to do next... it will be explained to you there.
para kadakayo amin daytoy nga oportunidad, kakabsat.
