Imee: Palace offered hero?s burial for FPJ
By Maricel V. Cruz, Reporter
President Arroyo has offered to bury former presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr. at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, according to opposition Rep. Imee Marcos of Ilocos Norte.
Marcos said the offer was extended by the President?s emissary to the family and relatives of Poe Tuesday night, quoting her sources.
Marcos, however, declined to disclose the details how the offer was made and who the President?s emissary was.
She said should Poe be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, the government should first declare him a National Artist, which is now being studied by the Palace.
?The family of Poe is for that, to bury Poe at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. Although a final decision has yet to be made,? she said.
The Palace did not comment on whether the President made the offer or not. But the idea got mixed reactions from her colleagues in the House.
Administration Rep. Gilbert Remulla of Cavite called it a ?bad? idea.
?It is a dangerous situation. Although her intention may be good and noble it could be viewed as a consuelo de bobo and fan the flames of hatred and discontent even further,? Remulla, chair of the House Committee on Public Information, said.
Rep. Benjamin Agarao of La?guna called it a ?good gesture of the Arroyo administration to prove the sincerity of its reconciliation effort.?
Marcos also asked President Arroyo to honor Poe by ordering flags to be flown at half-staff throughout the country.
Marcos made the call in the light of a heated debate that erupted in the House whether to honor Poe by calling for the flag at the Batasang Pam?bansa to be flown at half-staff.
On Tuesday opposition Rep. Teofisto Guingona 3rd of Bukidnon made the proposal in the plenary session ?to express unity to the mourning family of Mr. Poe.?
Some of President Arroyo?s allies in the House, such as Lakas Reps. Robert Ace Barbers of Surigao del Norte and Simeon Datumanong of Maguindanao, objected to the idea, questioning the legality of flying the flag at half-staff since Poe is not a public official.
According to Marcos, Mrs. Arroyo has the full discretion to decide on such a request.
She said it would not be the first time that the government will honor a ?national icon? if the Palace agrees to her proposal.
She recalled that her father, deposed dictator Ferdinand Marcos, accorded the same gesture when the boxing legend Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde died in 1985.
She called on the House Committee on Rules to refer her proposal to President Arroyo.
