My parents are contemplating on sending me to a Philipine college or university due to skyrocketing costs of college education here in the US.

At first, the idea seemed preposterous to me but after giving it some thought, I realized I am in fact leaning towards it.

I am aware of the high costs of college education here in the US and if going to a Philippine college is of any help to my parents, I am willing to go along with their decision. Aside from that, I would like to be re-united, and maybe spend some time, with relatives I didn't know ever existed.

The obvious choice is U.P., but I would prefer an Ilocos college or university. If anyone of you has a suggestion, I'd appreciate it.

Have a good day to you, all! :) ): :) :)

Since there is no UP-Laoag or UP-Ilocos, you are limited to the following choices:
> MMSU ? Batac
> MMSU ? Laoag
> DWC of Laoag
> NWU
> NCC
> Some computer colleges such as AMA, STI?

Pardon me if I miss anyone?s school, but here?s your chance to discuss your school?s academic performance compared to others, and try to lure Kelsey and other FilAms wanting a taste of Ilocos education, to your school.
This forum is now open for nomination of the best Phillippine college/university for a FilAm stude like Kelsey.

By the way, Kelsey what will you major in?

MMSU is making a "name."
It is cheap and, much like UP itself - it is a state university. Go to MMSU, you can't go wrong.

Good Luck, Kelsey!

MMSU offers the best brand of college education in Ilocandia. It has the best reputation as far as admission, performance in board examinations.
If its education excellence you are looking for, you can't go wrong wiht MMSU.

yeah, college education is really becoming more & more expensive and unless your son doesn't know how to snap, or handle a ball, soon education will only be for the rich ones.
That is why my brother encouraged all his sons to go into sports and try to get scholarship grant.

With the current educational system in the Philippines, paritcularly in Ilocos region, definitely ours is way behind in terms of facilities and competent educators. In the contrary, joining the best university does not guarantee the success of an individual it's merely a reputation. To mold is within, to become successful is by will.

I took up my grade school in a lowly public school in Laoag, where textbook to student ratio is 1~50. Somehow, our school manage to
produce quality individuals who became successful here and abroad. Ilocanos by nature celebrates the value of education.

BATAC, Ilocos Norte?A biology student of the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) has been chosen as one of five Bayer Young Environmental Envoys, who will join their counterparts from Thailand, Singapore and China, in an all-expenses paid educational trip to Germany on November 15 to 22 this year.

Bernard Benjamin Albano of this town and the four other environment envoys were chosen in a judging held at the Hotel Peninsula Manila in Makati City, according to a telephone call from Prof. Hennedine Aguada-Aguinaldo, who served as Albano?s adviser.

The other awardees were Diana Mallari of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, Emil Lacayan Jr. of De La Salle University (Manila main campus) and Reginald Andal of De La Salle Lipa City.

Aguinaldo failed to mention the name of the fifth awardee, saying there was commotion in the crowd when the names of the winners were announced.

The winners were chosen earlier as among the 13 Bayer Young Environmental Envoys who were selected based on their achievements and the zeal they have demonstrated in protecting the environment.

All the 13 envoys attended an all-expenses paid live-in ecocamp from September 13 to 17 in Tagaytay City, where they were given an overview of the Philippine environment and the current efforts of various sectors at addressing environment problems.

Billabong is right. Life is what you make it. But while joining the best university doesn't guarantee your success, it gives you greater chances of landing the best job.
Say you went into an interview with graduates from CLSU, UNP, DMMSU and you graduated from UP. I'm almost certain that the potential employers will give you the best consideration among those who are vying for the same job.

It just makes me wonder why, aside from saving maybe money - FilAms like Kelsey would want to come to the Philippines for college education.

Sure you may be able to save but how about your credentials. I mean what happens if you go back to the US after graduating from the Philippines. Will your American employers honor your Phil. education?

Its just a thought but consider the pros & cons. Perhaps the cons outweight the pros in the long run? :)

I didn?t think of this and you may have just given me a reason to re-evaluate my decisions. I?m not aware of any differences whatsoever between the standards of education of the two countries. What I am aware of is that there are FilAms who have gone to PI to study.

It would be good to know how these people are doing in the American workforce so we can have an idea.

I really appreciate all your taking the time to respond to my pos Thanks again! :)

Hi Kelsey, I just know someone who had moved to the US and told me that he had to go through a lot of procedures in order for his employer to consider his credentials.

I'm sorry I couldn't go into details but yes, he ran into problems as far as making his credentials viable.

Don't let this dissuade you. For your information there are a lot of people who succeeded in other countries although they earned their college degree here.

I was just talking to a friend and she confided to me that her cousin who came to the US a few years back didn't have a lot of trouble landing a job.

He finished Civil Enginieering in Northwestern College in Laoag and practiced it for a while there before coming to the US. Right now he is working in the State of California (building permit division?).

So I guess, where you got your degree is not much of big deal after all. What do you think? :)

Well, if your friend's story is to be taken as the basis, then where you come from is not really a big deal.

I'm not saying Northwestern College is not a good institution because if it is not, it shouldn't be there. As one post in another thread says, "to mold is within, to be successful is by will.

Your friend's cousin's experience (and education) has molded him to be a successful individual.

College and University in the Ilocos is different from UP or any School in Manila. In Laoag there is Northwestern University, Divine World College, AMACC, etc.. In Batac, Mariano Marcos State University is there. If you are planning for Engineering Courses, MMSU has good instructors and faculty staff as well as NU.
I've been to these Universities and I think you better they are all good enough. The right way to choose is these, would I enjoy going to these university everyday? Do they have good students too? Are my Instructors responsible enough for the goodness of my schooling.
Computer Education in Ilocos is getting better now.
Suggested School: MMSU, NU, AMACC
Agriculture/Fisheries : MMSU
Business and Management: MMSU, NCC, DWCL, DATA

Get Computer Engineering... Ilocos is Good.

I think we should explain how the schools in Ilocos differ from those in Manila (Mapua or UP or UST), besides the location, or name.
But can we even begin to compare these schools?
Maybe?

The difference between Manila and the province is that there are more places to hang out when you dont want to go to school. You can easily get to Recto area that is the UBelt that is full of surprises. There are more good looking women and men to look up to. There are more rallies, frat wars, floods and other that you can declare that today is Holiday. :)

The only different I know is that the way people accept that provincial school nowaday are making good specially in the Board Examination. That makes graduates from MMSU think of themselves as the best? During interview they say they have gone too far, too many experience. I can say they are good enough theoritically not much in practical application.

The reason for these is that most school in Ilocos Norte lack of resources at this time. Some laboratory equipments that needed by students, but if the students is resourceful enough the resources I am saying are just there nearby.

I studied in Manila, was a drop out then jump to another school, graduated, teaches engineering in ilocos norte then went to Manila again. In between these, I was an explorer but these could eat much of my time. So choose the right school for you and enjoy being in college, if you dont you will be missing that when you have graduated. Good Luck to all.

Surprisingly, schools/universities in the provinces, though lacking in equipments still manage to produce topnotchers, right?
MMSU is slowly making a name, especially in the field of research (science/technology) and there will come a time that it will be comparable to those in Manila.

Most of us think of those big city schools as the best that is why we aspire to be in those institutions. However, I think that no matter which school you go to if you have the determination and the drive, you will be able to build a solid foundation for success. The only problem is, when it's time to look for a job, employers will most likely choose those who come from a more prestigious university.

Yes, its true. The best thing you could do after graduating from college in the province is to get a masteral degree in UP, La Salle or Ateneo.
In IT Profession, these schools are employers keep on looking:
1. La Salle - because the speak proficient english snd very srticulate. They can sell their self at a high price.
2. Ateneo - same english with more technology.
3. UP - Good english plus awareness to almost anything, phsychologically very good and wierd.
4. Adamson - you can get the best if not the worst.
5. AMA - technically good.
6. Mapua - Good technical writing and oral, part of La Salle.
7. East Asia- FEU = this school is making a noise in the industry. They are pretty good graduates.
8. International School (Any international)

I have some graduate from MMSU who passed initial exam but during interview technically they know the question but refused to demostrate any skill. So technically and practically they are not confident of what they have (equipments).

Northwestern University - lack of english conversation, technically advance than MMSU but cannot expressed their self in English.

AMA Laoag - instructor come from MMSU and NU
DATA - same thing
STI - same thing, they mostly enjoy being in school.
Divine - growing up, watch out for that.

This is in general for IT. :)

How can school in the province can be leveled to that of Manila if instuctors and administrator keep on destroying other's school reputation?
-mmsu say NU is not good because...this instructor do like...etc
fact: that instructor graduated from MMSU. :)

Maharlika
01-14-2004, 06:02 PM
I think you're right.
Some of this administrators are like politicians to the point that they resort to smear campaign strategies just to get a bigger chunk of the student population. This is particularly true in the provinces where there's stiffer and more tangible conpetition amongst universities and colleges.
In the end, the students suffer from the brunt of these smear campaigns by shcool administrators for painting a bad image/reputation of that school.
Crab mentality!

okay here is the thing...first things first...consider the entrance procedures. even if the tuition in the phils is comparatively cheaper, one cant just enter universities with just money on hand...especially prestigious ones...and if you like to enter UP(or in any other state run university and other private universities), your entrance would depend on your choice courses and how well you fared in the entrance examinations...based from experience though the entrance exams in state universities in the provinces are very easy compared to that UP or ateneo or wherever...another is, you are from abroad so you have to think too what kind of environment would you like to be in too because again based on experience, different universities present different aura and environment for learning but if you are the adaptable type, there should be no problem. caution though how the students from where you come from may not think the same way or not even express themself\ves in the same way to where you are going....plus of course...it also depends on the course youd like to take and how far youd like to go with it (this you have received a lot of decisions) and then some ...im sorry i will have to continue this later i have a phone calll...im sorry... :D
