Wow! This is life!
Munching Glazed Donut (at Krispy Kreme Reno) while posting at INOL :)

Post here the WiFi Hotspots in your area so we know where to go - and hopefully, MEET. As in EB

Anybody is interested in "war-driving" to get open WAP's in your area? This is actually a "hacking - unethical way" but you can make this as an ethical approach by telling your neighbors or people that have WAP's setup using default configurations or having weak WEP's that their wireless networks are vulnerable. Who knows maybe you will get paid by making their wireless networks a little secured to war-drivers.

I have written some projects and articles on how to secure wireless networks, if you are interested, feel free to drop me a note.

Kuna da haan kanu nga secure ta wireless ta anyone can intercept whatever data you send through the "air".

It just amazes me how these people can sniff those data from the "air". How can they even see it with their own eyes?

I know its a stupid question but what can I do? I am UN-GEEK!!!

I know there are 2 "unsecured" wireless networks around my house (netgear and linksys). I believe these are in their default configs judging from their SSID's.

Most Border's Bookstores are WiFi hotspots.

I'm willing to discuss to everyone how this can be done, and what are the possible ways that we can do to secure its transaction. I am afraid it will take the whole space here to do so. But let me give you a quick overview.

Whether it is Radio Frequency (air) or through electronically, we would not be able to see these packets (physically). But through the use of some programs or software, this can be "sniff" off from their transacation.

Older programs such as FTP, Telnet, HTTP, Mail, and others were created NOT with security in mind. Therefore, when they travel through their paths they are usually sent as "clear text". Example, if I login to this forum with my username and password, these info are routed as clear text. Now if I am able to spoof my IP and pretend that I am the destination of the packet, I could basically open the packet and see the content of it. This is usually termed as Man-in-the-middle attack.

With newer protocols in place like SSL (HTTPS), S/FTP, and SSH, instead of passing the data as clear-text, it uses an algorithm to encrypt the data in what we call the cipher-text. Even though the Man-in-the-middle can capture the packet, it would take them years to break the key code of the algorithm. This is presented when you are doing Online Order when you see https:// instead of http://

Yahoo login is equiped with algorithm such as SHA which basically creates a digest called hash that is fixed in length and cannot be decrypt. This is an example of a pretty good encryption.

I am running out of space, you feel free to drop me an email if you want to know nore about Wireless and the world of security. I have written couple of White Papers and articles as to how you secure your network.

You should have that published, MHTS so everyone can benefit from it. INOL perhaps can dedicate a space for your article. If it's for our security, I don't see any reason why INOL should turn it down.

May I have a look-see, MHTS? :)

I just have a weak WEP (home network). I would like to make it more secure. It really takes time to read/implement what my wireless router's manual says about it's security features.

I'll send it over to you gr8-one, and feel free to email me if you want a generic guideline to secure your wireless network.

Myrna, DamnYankee, and other INOLers, it is not a guarantee that I will be able to answer all your questions, but I am here! Email me all your details, and I'll try to help (if I can, of course). Besides, we are all INOLers, right?

Hey I ave a question:
Could Bluetooth and 802.11G wirelss technology co-exist? Or can they even talk to each other?

Just curious.

I don't want to make this very long, so I will summarize it as compact as I could. But feel free to ask if you need more info.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (e.g. 802.11G) wireless technology were designed for two completely different purposes. Because you put them together in one question, I assumed you would like to compare their abilities to function in bandwidth transmission.

Before I go about explaining that, some good example of Bluetooth technology are wireless mouse, keyboards, printer, even your garage doors. They work in a way that each end have a chip and knows how to communicate to the other end.

By comparison, WiFi LAN adapters are much more powerful and capable of reaching data transmission rates than Bluetooth. As discussed earlier, Bluetooth's main intention is not the LAN, rather than deives to connect to the main computer without the use of cables or physical connections.

To answer your question, yes they can co-exist in a way that you are not using them in the same protocol. One of my computers have wireless mouse and keyboard (Bluetooth technology) and 802.11G connections to the LAN (Local Area Network) - Wi-Fi.

Now, to answer your second question: In today's environment, I don't think so just yet. This is what I am thinking you would like to have - You want your Palm OS (Bluetooth technology) to connect to your WAP (Wireless Access Point - 802.11G). Your PalmOS either have to have a Wi-Fi to communicate to the WAP or your WAP have to have a chip built-in to communicate to your PalmOS.

Again, these two technologies are "wireless" but they are meant to operate in their own way they were designed to do. Bluetooth - wireless devices (mouse, keyboards, etc). Wi-Fi - wireless network (Ethernet, Token Ring, etc).

Hope this helps, if not, feel free to ask, else, feel free to add.

Oh thank you Myrna. Just trying to share what I know. And of course, sometimes I can be wrong, it happened many times. But I am open to corrections, suggestions and recommendations. I like to share what I know - it a circle of knowledge. Share what you know, then they will share what they have learned, and the same knowledge be passed on to others, then everybody knows what we are talking about :D
