View Full Version : Where do the real Ilocanos come from?

Alistair

Okay, here's a question for you FBIs:

I know there's Ilocos Norte, Sur, La Union which I have learned comprise the Ilocos Region, but where do the real, true-blue, FBI Ilocanos come from? Ilocos Norte I suppose?

What do you mean? All the provinces you mentioned are Ilocano-speaking provinces. Ilocos Region also includes Abra and Pangasinan. :)

TCardona

They come from Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra. :)

The real Ilocano comes from the heart.

The real Ilocano is a hardworking man, thrifty but not tightwad. The real Ilocano is a survivor.

It doesn't matter if you are Ilocos Nortean, Surrian, LaUnionan(?) or Abranian. Not being able to speak Ilocano does not necessarily mean you're not real or genuine Ilocano.

We come from the north. We come from Ilocos Norte! :)

And then some moved out. Some went to the south, some to the east and west. :) :) :)

Along with Ilocos Sur, no other place can claim a "truer", deeper, kind of Ilocano culture.

Anyone who disagrees, see [Unknown] :) :) :)

[Unknown], flash said he's moving to Laoag in Ocober.

From what I understand, the Ilocos region (or is it just Ilocos Norte & Sur?) use to be one province, but due to population growth in the region, the spaniards had to divide it for more efficient governance. That is why we have now La Union, Abra and Pangasinan. Someone correct me if I am wrong, please. I'm not a history buff, okay?

Now, history further tells us that the term Ilocos came from the word "Ylocos", which means "from the river" (or close to the river or something).

Eventually, the people in "Ylocos" came to be known as ilocanos.

I guess regardless of where you, or your ancestors came from, be it Ilocos Norte or Ilocos Sur, La Union or Abra - you are a real and genuine Ilocano.

Any rebuttal is welcome!

Will the real Ilocanos please stand out? :)

Seriously, the real Ilocanos come from Ilocos Norte. :) :) :)

So where is "more Ilocano?"

Ilocos Norte or Ilocos Sur?

Roldan

It depends on your criteria. Basically, the two Ilocoses are the "twin hearts of Ilocandia".

Is this true...

Ilocos Norte was considered as God-forsaken land because of many faultlines and rocky soil forcing many Ilokanos to migrate to other lands?

FlushedMX
10-10-2003, 05:54 AM
I beg to disagree that Ilocos Norte is a God-forsaken land. Just because beneath it are faultlines does not make IN a forsaken land.
:) :)
The state of California lies beneath faultlines but look, its one of the most progressive state in the US.

Ilocos Norte is a land of beauty, of rolling hills and terrains, white sand beaches and yes, great leaders.

Ilocanos by nature are adventurous. We are survivors.

Then why not focus on commercial and industral aspects instead of agricultural? I know that agriculure there is not very much flourished. Tourism, Commerce, Technology and Industries can compensate that shortcoming.

Truthfully, I hate to see Pagudpud become like a Boracay, but it seems like this quaint little town can't escape the rage of development.

I've not seen Boracay myself but it has become a haven of criminals & thieves as well as prostitution.

Spare Pagudpud, please.

Vice, pollution, prostitution etc...

Actually, kilala na dito sa Maynila ang Pagudpud, wherever they say beaches, sasabihin nila "Ilocos", but they actually mean Pagudpud.

Last time na nakapunta ako doon ay mga 7 years ago - and to think that I am from Ilocos Norte :)

Pag nagpunta sila dun, eeskapo patungong Laoag then Pagudpud. Siguro by December or May... Sana...

I've been longing to see Ilocos Norte.

I read in the travel guides na mahal nga mga accomodations sa Pagudpud. Check the site for Tierra Rika. Meron pang iba like Arinaya, Villa Del Mar, Saud Beach Resort, Panzian, etc. But fortunately, they are offerring considerable discount during off-season. Possible kaya ang 50% discount? Sana.

It's the publicity that's driving the costs of accommodations up in Pagudpud.

Add to that the publicity being generated by a Sigeon-Reyna film whith shooting locations in Pagudpud.

Igorot.

Examples of an Igorot saying the word "ngarud":
- Bahala kan a ngarud!
- Sigi ma ngarud!
- Ay apo daytoy nga tao nga! Sikan a ngarud!
- etcetera etcetera

In fact they use this word so much that sometimes they pronounced it:
"NGAR'D" - Note the silent "u", as in:

= agsina tan ngar'd!

Anakin Skywalker

But it does not necessarilly mean its the Ilocano's favorite word.
