My pc is "infected" with the TROJAN virus and I'm getting crashed, getting a lot of pop ups. My Norton antivirus cannot do anything. What shall I do? MHTS, do you have any suggestions? I need a complete virus clean-up. :? :?
Recommendations:
1 - Patch your system. If you are using Windows XP, the SP2 should help you configure your Security Settings. If not using XP, try to patch it with the latest updates.
2 - Make sure that your Norton is up-to-date and that it is real-time scanning. Scan your pc to remove any possible virus infections or worms.
3 - Try installing AdAware SE and download its latest signature and run a full and throurough scan, it should at least remove any possible Trojans and pop ups installed (including Kazaa and other P2P clients - but not Kazaa-Lite).
4 - You can also download SpyBot Search and Destroy. It may catch something that AdAware did not catch.
5 - If you are comfortable messing with the Registry, you can dig in there and delete any suspicious signature of Trojan or Worms. I don't highly recommend this as a single mistake with the Registry, could deem your PC unusable.
6 - If none of them is working - backup your files, and re-install the OS and VirusScan.
7 - Norton, and all other virusscan programs are not worthy if they are not updated. Make sure you update and patch your system regularly. Patch, then scan it with Norton and Adaware.
Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me or email me if you need some good software! Good Luck daguerrson!

Thank you very, very much, MHTS. I have Windows XP. I'll try your recommendations, whichever works, as soon as I get plenty of time. I appreciate your assistance. 8) By the way, I just downloaded an updated version of SYMANTEC antivirus and tried to harness it so I'm still observing its effect. I guess it's okay on Mozilla Firefox but I do not know on Internet Explorer. That's where most of the crashes occurred. That's before I shifted to Mozilla Firefox. Have'nt tried yet.
You're very very welcome daguerrson. Any time! Be very careful when downloading SP2 for XP. There were issues with other existing software. But I haven't experienced any of those issues yet. IE should implement pop up blocking and other security features once SP2 is installed. On the other hand, the latest plugins of Mozilla Firefox has also the capability to block ActiveX, pop ups and other things.
If you upgraded your Symantec and its data definitions, it should help you isolate some of the infections on your pc. Again, those programs that search for malwares and trojans, such as AdAware or Spybot will help you isolate them more....
Have fun!

Since you dropped some hint here, is iMac unaffected by the headaches that plague Microsoft, gr8-one? Might try to peer into the apple computers next time i go to Best Buy or Circuit City

The keyword is "plague". No, Mac's are not affected with the Microsoft's plague, or plagues. Most of the diseases spread out mostly affects Microsoft products. While there are also Mac's viruses, they are katiting kung compare sa Windows'.

Apo daguerson, you'll be in good hands with Macintosh.
I don't know about you guys there but here in the islands, Macs are like the Lotuses or the Ferraris of computers. I used to carry my iBook in and around the different Wi-Fi hotspots here and it's a head-turner. It's fast and dependable. All these years, I have never experienced the likes of the most-dreaded "blue-screen of death" that Windows often spits out when something unusual happens.
Apo dags, the new MacBooks are definitely sights to behold. I've drive-tested one at CompUSA and they're better than the iBooks. The new Intel processor used makes the MacBook a winner since it can run on both OSX and XP. What makes this feature excellent is that you can still use your favorite Windows applications and then switch to OSX when you want to surf the net, thus reducing your risk of virus/spam infection significantly.
Apo dags, this Christmas get yourself a "Lotus" because you deserve it!

Right now, I am doubtful of the effectiveness of those antivirus/spamkiller biggies like Norton and McAfee. I had these installed on my company-issued laptop (one after the other) and none of them seemed to have worked in preventing trojans to get into the system. The tragedy doesn't end there because they also are unable to clean up "their" mess. They can detect something is wrong in the system no doubt about that but they can't get rid some of the virus/adware completely. The reason why is, the virus-writers are always one step ahead of the game and this is something I have already accepted.
So I dumped my McAfee and saved the company maybe hundreds of dollars " I have Windows Defender and like McAfee it can't get rid of all the viruses completely but at least I am not paying for subscription. So whatever Windows Defender can not get rid of, I'll get rid of it manually.
So far so good.
Here are some tips to avoid being victimized by these trojans and adware:
Email:
1. You've heard it a lot of times - if subject looks unusual, don't open it. Delete it at once, meaning delete it from your email's recycle bin folder.
2. If you don't know who it is from - delete it!
3. Get Pegasus Mail - more secure than Outlook. You may continue using your Outlook but always be on the lookOut - no pun intended :)
Web surfing:
1. Avoid Kazaa, Limewire and Porn sites :) Put safety first before pleasure
2. Install a Firewall
