View Full Version : Fil-Ams, would you send your child to a school in the Phils?

BB-M

This may be a silly question but there is a thread about the best school for a fil-am coed so there must be a lot of Fil-Ams going to schools in PI.
I am not trying to belittle our schools but the mentality is, napinpintas nu abroad, di ngamin?

So as a Filipino American, would you consider sending your child to study in the Philippines? Or would you, as a Fil-Am coed consider going to PI to satisfy your educational hunger?

I can answer your question, BB-M on the economic standpoint. I would send my child to the Philippines to study there if it were more feasible for me as a parent, considering the source of income that I have. By and large, education in the Philippines is still much cheaper than here in the US. I still believe in the quality of education that we have there in the Philippines. There are draWbacks, I know but they can be overcome if your child is resourceful.

My sister-in-law sent her child back to the Philippines to take up medicine in Cebu and when the child finished her academics and passed the board exam, she came back to the US, took the government exam and passed it. Now she is a resident physician in one of the hospitals in New York City.

Actually, the term "common sense" is a misnomer, because that kind of sense is not really that common, as most of us think. You've got to have a good grasp of things around you to be able to have that.

I agree with what Marcy and ading Glow said......and yes...going home to Philippines is not like driving here in the USA....so why would I let them go and study there?....whatever school you go...popular or not...it depends on the student....if he/she is really intelligent...the school where she got his/her degree doesn't matter...

My twins....are Identical too....they always want to be with each other....they stayed in the same room,...and never wanted to be seperated at all..... when they were in Junior High.....they used to switch class...Matthew is good in Math, and Jarrod is fair..they were not in the same class so if Jarrod has a test...Matthew sits for him....and their teachers can't tell at all......they dated...but the weird thing is they like the same girl.....I don't know why....like Matt, the eldest had a GF....and then went their seperate ways....Jarrod the younger twin, took her as his GF...and it went on , and on and on....till they joined the military...they are in the same squadron, and same Base...they joined as buddies so they can never seperate them......

I agree with what Marcy and ading Glow said......and yes...going home to Philippines is not like driving here in the USA....so why would I let them go and study there?....whatever school you go...popular or not...it depends on the student....if he/she is really intelligent...the school where she got his/her degree doesn't matter...

I believe you Myrna. I was a graduate of National University, not a popular engineering school like UP, UST, Mapua, La Salle, etc. But when I went to take my masters at UP my classmates in Advanced Math were one of the best graduates of UP, UST, Mapua, and La Salle. At first I was a little bit intimidated, especially about a third of my classmates were graduates of UP and attended Philippines Science High School. There was a term in math, "quadratic mean" that has another name and I pointed out to our professor. The other term is "root mean square (RMS)". Since they know that I was only a graduate of NU and they have not heard of the term, almost everybody laughed, say about 75% of the class. Then our professor said, "Why did you laugh? He is correct!". Wow, I was so proud of myself that day! That also bolstered my confidence. From thereon if we have an assignment, even some of those UP graduates, they always ask me to check their work. I ended up getting the highest grade in that class and the rest of my subjects.

Thanks Touch and Glow. :)

Back to the question whether I send my child to a school in the Philippines, my answer is yes but my wife didn't like the idea. As GLOW said we might have ended up paying more because of frequent trips to the Philippines. My son also did not like the idea because most of his high school classmates were then planning to study here. He ended up studying in UC Irvine with his friends. This is his freshman year.

Yeah, UC systems are good. The reason why they are good though is because they mostly take the top 10% of the graduating class. UC Berkeley will be the best school for your twins. It is very close to Vallejo.

They are the same with my second son. He is also 16 and a Junior in high school. He also wants to become a lawyer someday. He is also into 4 AP classes. He is into AP Engilish, AP US History, AP Calculus. and AP Physics. Yes AP classes are hard because they are college level subjects. He is also into Varsity Basketball and Volleyball. He is so tired when he comes home from school and he sitll have to study.

I was comparing the syllabus of Philippine Science High School (PSHS) found in the internet with the syllabus of my son's. I found out that my son's syllabus is more advanced.

I'm glad our kids are at the same age, have the same dream, and are all smart. :)

I WOULD STILL CONSIDER SENDING MY KIDS TO THE PHILIPPINES IF THAT'S THE ONLY WAY FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO GO TO COLLEGE. COLLEGE EDUCATION HERE IN THE US IS GETTING MORE AND MORE EXPENSIVE ESPECIALLY THE IVY LEAGUE ONES.

DURING MY COLLEGE DAYS, UP WAS A HOTBED OF STUDENT COMMUNISM AND UNREST - THE TIME OF KABATAANG MAKABAYAN.

MY SISTER-IN-LAW IS A PRODUCT OF THE UP LAW SCHOOL AND A CLASSMATE OF MIRIAM DEFENSOR BUT SHE IS HERE IN THE US. MY ABIRAT IS A PRODUCT OF THE UP COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE BUT HE IS ALSO HERE IN THE US. ANOTHER SISTER-IN-LAW OF MINE IS A PRODUCT OF THE UP GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION. SHE DOES NOT WANT TO COME OVER TO THE US MASKI NAGHIHIRAP NA SIYA. BUT SHE LIKES THE DOLLARS FROM THE US.

these days apo djmichaeljay ket han unay a kastan... isu lang nga maemphasize no maminsan ti kina Anti-US da ket ta isu gamin ti maiwag wagayway in every protest rallies. I think you would find that it is not the Fil-Ams that the students dont like but the US government for its "meddling" in Philippine affairs and the Philippine government for letting US meddle.

syak siguro ket no matter where me and my family will be living in the future ket i will always want my kid(s) to study in the Philippines unless of course we will be filthy rich hehehe ...who would pass up the opportunity of IVY leagues in US or any other country, right? but the important thing is, a wholesome, effective and an education that will bring about change not only to my child(ren) but also to those around him through him... oha! hehehe

Nu siak la nga maysa, I will send my kids to a school in the Philippines for a lot of reasons. 1.) I want them to experience the life in Ilocos Norte ( tay inkayo agdidigos diay kali nga adda nuang nga kaduayo . 2.) Nalaklaka ti agpabasa dita, so I will just send him there with a sports car  3. Bareng maala nga artista diay ABS-CBN. 8) 4.) I believe that it is not the school that matters but its the willingness of the student to learn, practice and desire to learn more.

Husto ta kunam cousin. You gonna end up spending more if you send your kids in the Philippines to study, especially now that tickets are getting more expensive. That was also my plan to have my kids study in the Philippines. My eldest son used to like the idea especially when I told him I might buy him a condo. But when he graduated in college, he end up following his classmates.

manang/manong/ading/, ti tuition range iti maysa nga university ket $1500 - $35,000 per semester. some schools even require the student to stay in a campus dorm (mandatory) for the first two years even if you live locally. that is an additional $10,000 - $20,000. include books, which is $75-$350 each. ton malpas mon to ti agadalen, naikali kanton ti student loans.
