If you are into interstate driving, you should be aware of a few things, one of which is the imposition of seatbelt laws by the different states along your route. Violators are fined so be wary about the states that are very strict on this.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 22 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have primary seatbelt laws, which allow police to stop motorists simply for failing to wear seat belts.

Here they are: ALABAMA, CALIFORNIA, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, GEORGIA, HAWAII, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, LOUISIANA, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, NEW JERSEY, NEW MEXICO, NEW YORK, N. CAROLINA, OKLAHOMA, OREGON, S. CAROLINA, TENNESSEE, TEXAS, and WASHINGTON.

Other states have secondary laws, which allow police to issue a seat-belt violation only if a driver is stopped for another infraction.

Here is the list: ALASKA, ARIZONA, ARKANSAS, COLORADO, FLORIDA, IDAHO, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MASSACHUSETTS, MINNESOTA, MISSISSIPPI, MISSOURI, MONTANA, NEBRASKA, NEVADA, NORTH DAKOTA, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, SOUTH DAKOTA, UTAH, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN and WYOMING.

NEW HAMPSHIRE has no adult safety belt law

Many states in the US are now adopting the popular electronic collection system in tollways and they are also working on the compatibilities of these systems so that the gadget called transponder that you have in your car can work across state lines. We have here in Illinois the I-Pass system and with its transponder, it allows us to travel seamlessly across state lines throughout the East Coast along highways, bridges, and tunnels that are part of their E-ZPass electronic-toll system that they have over there. Alternately, the E-ZPass system transponders can also work in Illinois. The E-ZPass Interagency Group, an alliance of toll agencies that take E-ZPass tags, now counts 22 agencies in 11 states as members.

The Maine Turnpike Authority also made its electronic tolling system compatible with E-ZPass devices this year, (2006). The Indiana Toll Road (our next-door state neighbor) which is expected to implement electronic tolling system in January 2007 is joining also.

Electronic systems are cheaper for the toll agencies to operate than the traditional toll booth collectors and coin drop collecting devices obviously. It is cheaper also for the motorists because cash payments are more expensive. It also allows him to travel faster because he can pay toll without stopping at all.

The emphasis on electronic toll-paying comes as the number of vehicles on the road have increased very rapidly - faster than the highway system capacity.

Here in Illinois, the transponders are issued at I-Pass outlet stores and also at some selected grocery stores. A motorist pays for it and it is reloadable thru the internet with his credit card account. He can monitor also thru the internet the payments made and the remaining balance in his account.

Isn't that cool, guys :?:

Guys, though my interpreter is not home(my wife), I can glean a bit of what you are talking about.....my wife and I loves to travel around the USA, but since 911, it gave us the fright to fly except on military planes..if we can get a hop, but we do it if we want to go abroad(military hop) most of the time..around the US it is exciting to drive, the country is beautiful....and I cannot go wrong , thanks to my wife, she is a good backseat driver...I am in trouble if I don't put my seatbelt before I start the car, she is meticulous..and you better do what she says or else...

Illinois is a little bit lax in enforcing its speed limit of 55 mph but if you exceed 80 mph, watch out because the roads are radar monitored. you may not see a cop tailing you with his sirens and lights but he may be at the next turn waiting for you.

How's your rush hour traffic in illinois?
Here in the island (Oahu), a normally 30-minutes drive could become an hour and a half during morning traffic. If there's a stall or an accident, add another 45-min to an hour more.

I'm moving to Ilocos!

Rush hour traffic in Chicago is bad also. From where I am, it's 25 minutes to downtown in light traffic in the expressway but during rush hour, it becomes 1 hour. That can even get worse when there are games in town. Imagine, there are many Chicago teams - there is the Bears for football; the Cubs and White Sox for baseball; the Bulls for basketball; the Blackhawks for hockey. If two, three, or all of them are playing on a given day, the traffic becomes a nightmare!

Hmmmm.... it looks to me like you are in another dimension, Trish  . . . .
It is said, the way, not road, to heaven is a straight and very narrow one. There may not be a heavy traffic but your body (or is it soul?) gets squeezed along the way and a lot of us may not even be able to get there because we may get entangled somewhere.

OPEN ROAD TOLLING is opening up statewide in the state of Illinois. This will greatly ease up congestions on the road and reduces travel time.
Open road tolling allows you to pay the toll without stopping or even reducing your expressway speed as long as you have the I-PASS TRANSPONDER in your car. Is'nt that cool :!: Illinois is one of the first states to have that. Way to go, USA :!:
