Philippine foreign minister dies in Taiwan
MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine Foreign Secretary Blas Ople has died in Taiwan after being taken ill on a plane while on a foreign trip, the Philippine foreign ministry says.
"We are deeply saddened and regret to announce that Secretary Ople passed away today of natural causes," the ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

Earlier, a Philippine diplomatic source, who declined to be named, said the plane, on a flight from Tokyo to Bangkok, was diverted to Taiwan on Saturday after Ople developed breathing problems, but that the minister had died in intensive care.

Ople, 76, had accompanied President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on a visit to Japan on Friday. He was on his way to Bangkok en route to the Middle East when he fell ill, foreign ministry officials in Manila said.
