Kas maysa nga Pilipino (wenno Ilokano) nga agnaed iti sabali nga pagilian, napasaram kadin iti na-descriminate (racially) iti uray ania man a wagas?. Kasla koma idiay pagtrabahuan, wenno iti bus, no ag-board ka iti eroplano, wenno mangan iti medyo high-class nga restaurant ken uray ania ditan?
Have you ever been subjected to racial or sexual discrimination as a Filipino in a foreign land?

Oh yeah!
Even those who say they don't discriminate, they do discriminate - myself included. Please don't get me wrong on this one.
We may not discriminate through our actions/speeches but in our thoughts, we sometimes unwittingly discriminate other people. I mean we can do this in a lot of ways without us knowing it until someone points that out to us.
One may do, say, or think of, something without intent of discrimination but sometimes other people interpret it otherwise.
We just have to be careful on whatever we do or say. That's why they say "think twice" sometimes

First, read the problem.
Pinay overseas worker bewails discrimination
Emily Abrera
Chair, McCann-Erikson, Phils.
I'VE been living in a beautiful island somewhere in the Atlantic for more than a year now. Things were hard for me right from the start. I studied in college (on a full scholarship) on Monday nights and I worked as a waitress on weekends. The company that I worked for had seen my potential and gave me a big break by giving me the chance to work full time. Not only that, they also gave me a shortened probation. And I am proud to say that I'm the first Filipino to work for a big company in this prestigious island, the first Filipino to be on a full scholarship, the first to graduate with merit in the course that I am taking and the first Filipino to be employed by a big company.
My problem arose when we had a new temp who is a local person of this country. She has been giving me a hard time by bad-mouthing me to everybody and having a negative attitude towards me. Whenever I ask her even just a simple question, she goes on and on about it making me look stupid. It's upsetting and frustrating. I talked to our supervisor, department head and also to the Human Resources head about the situation but instead of doing something about it, they just let it slide. I am sure that I am starting to be a victim of discrimination but what should I do? I'm the only Filipino in our company and in a multinational company here in this island. Should I just leave things alone? Now, they are saying that I should get professional help. I know that I'm not the problem because whenever they have department meetings, I am the only one not included unless the ''big cheese" is the one convening the meeting.
I cannot please everybody but I just want to work harmoniously with others. The temp that I'm working with is desperately doing her best to get my officemates' attention while I'm trying my best to keep silent and just do my work. But she keeps on and on after me. I want her to stop but my superiors don't want to listen to me saying that I am the problem because I let things get to me when I should just leave things alone.
It's hard and right now I'm just thinking of looking for another job but running away from this situation won't do me any good. I know the fact that my immediate supervisor likes her and is trying her best to give this temp a permanent job. It's not my business anymore but how come they can't tell her to just leave me alone. She is telling everybody that I'm bossy and that I don't know what I'm doing when in fact I was the one who trained her. Please advise.
Then, the advise....
First among the rest
Thank you for your letter. Your story is both intriguing and admirable! Indeed, you have many reasons to be happy and proud: you live on a beautiful island, you were granted a full scholarship and graduated with merit; you now have a permanent job, and you even enjoy the distinction of being the first Filipino to work for a big multinational company. It would seem that yours is a position many would envy, and yet you sound miserable ... and it's all because of this one person!
Harmony in diversity
As I understand it, this person is still a temporary hire, and is someone you trained. Just like you when you first joined the company, this person wants to showcase her capability, and maybe is overly eager to earn her permanency, too. After all, job security is important, isn't it? You yourself have set a great record, by earning your permanency after a shorter probation than usual. Is it possible she is trying to emulate that?
You mention the idea of harmony somewhere in your letter. It is an ideal all companies aim for but it's not that easy to achieve, especially if the group is big and the individuals come from diverse backgrounds. Maybe many of your coworkers come from different nationalities and even cultures, but perhaps there are more who are local hires, just like the new person. If, as you describe, she has a strong and even aggressive personality, then it's possible that this has made you feel somewhat left out. If there's a language barrier as well, this can add to your feeling of being excluded from the rest.
Reflection
Companies try to embrace the best policies that support good practices and minimize problems in the work environment, but sometimes conflicts arise from other aspects that are difficult to control: for instance, clashes of personality, or what we sometimes loosely refer to as "bad chemistry." You know how sometimes there are people whom we just find "antipatiko," whom we instinctively and for no apparent reason flatly dislike at first meeting? Actually, when we analyze our feelings, we eventually get to the real reasons. Sometimes it's because that person reminds us of someone we had a bad experience with in the past; or it may be that we see the newcomer as an intruder into our territory and hence we feel threatened. It can also be brought about by a misunderstanding of cultural backgrounds and cues.
If you've already approached your Human Resources head and your supervisor and they don't think there's a major problem, then perhaps you are being over-affected by the way this other person does things. Certainly, if they have gone so far as to say you should seek professional help, that's worrisome. Hopefully, the quality of your work hasn't suffered because of this perceived problem. It would be unfortunate if you allowed this to happen.
May I suggest that you spend a little thinking about all these aspects of the situation? Even better, pray about it. While not everything can be solved by reflection, prayer can give us a fresh perspective of our problems, and help us become more open to resolving differences with others.
Options
Consider the following pieces of advice:
Try not to judge everything she does or says. You see, it's quite possible that the new person feels a bit like you do (i.e., that you don't like her); she just has a different way of showing her insecurity.
Try to be happy for her if she is praised. You both work for the same company. You are teammates, not competitors.
Try to concentrate on how to improve your own work, rather than watching what that other person is doing.
Why not try to befriend her? The more you know someone, the easier it is to understand his or her quirks and behavior. Her actions may not be aimed at criticizing you; maybe that's the way she is to everyone.
And lastly, try not to indulge in gossip-you may be reacting to other people's interpretations of what was said rather than what was actually meant.
Remind yourself that you are a good employee and that the company values your contribution. They have given you excellent opportunities. Trust that if you continue to just do good work, and think well of others, then no one can bring you down. And you will be "first among the best."
I apologize if I sounded preachy. It just seemed like this was the sort of advice that would help you most right now. God bless.
Emily Abrera

In the military... they implement equal opputunity... whether you are white, black. asian etc.... if somebody treated u bad because of ur color/race... u can file a complaint against him, and if he is proven guilty, he will be demoted ...that's why I chose to work for the military... I can't see myself working off base... there is too much discrimination out there!

Me too ading linda...you did a good job!......here in the USA....most nannies are from England....and they are hired by rich people....to be a nanny is not a degrading job..........like ading Glow said, you won't hire them unless you trust them....because they are the ones taking care of your preciuos litte ones!....me too... I could have hired a nanny for my kids.. I was too busy then with my job......but I am so lucky enough to have my parents and grand parents and my sisters and brothers ...they helped me bring them up as good human beings.....
