I was reading Fortune Magazine's 2000 global businesses ranking and naturally, the first four are US businesses. Then comes a british company and then another US Company and then a Dutch company. Toyota, a Japanese company comes in 12th, and so on and so forth.

Now my curiosity struck me, are there any Philippine businesses in this ranking? The answer is, there is only one. And the company is PLDT and is ranked 1357.

Cupid, the ranking is based on sales, profit, and market value. It does not necessarily mean, therefore, that a company has to be very big to be in the top spot. A company can be in the top spot even if it is small if it generates income efficiently, in proportion to its size.

Dagitoy ti top 20:

1. CITIGROUP - BANKING (US)
2. GENERAL ELECTRIC - CONGLOMERATES (US)
3. BANK OF AMERICA - BANKING (US)
4. AMERICAN INTL. GROUP - INSURANCE (US)
5. HSBC GROUP - BANKING (UK)
6. EXXON MOBILE - OIL & GAS OPERATIONS (US)
7. ROYAL DUTCH/SHELL GROUP - OIL & GAS OPERATIONS ( NE)
8. BP - OIL & GAS OPERATIONS (UK)
9 . JPMORGAN CHASE - BANKING (US)

COUSIN, I am talking about the April 17, 2006 issue of Fortune Magazine. Interestingly, there is no number 40 in the ranking because there are two companies that are ranked 39 and so either of them could be 40th. They are Deutche Telecom (telecom services) and Wachovia (banking), not housing.
