Malagip yo pay daydi Betamax-VHS war which JVC's VHS format won?
Well folks, there's a brewing war between Sony's Blu-ray and Toshiba's HD-DVD on the next storage format. Just when you thought you have the latest and greatest dvd technology with your recently-purchased DVD-Recorder, the Blu-ray and HD-DVD has rendered it obsolete, yet again!

Sony lost the first battle to JVC, I am betting Sony wins it this time againts Toshiba. What do you think?

Blu-ray (http://www.blu-ray.com) vs. HD-DVD (http://www.toshiba.co.jp/hddvd/eng/index.htm)

Yes GR8-ONE, I remember.

That rivalry between Sony and JVC in days of yore, it was some marketing blitzkrieg on the part of JVC that left Sony eat the dust. It is not really an indicator of which technology (ie, the beta or the VHS) is better. Initially, many electronic buffs say the Beta was better but then since it was not widely used in the US due to an aggressive marketing strategy by JVC for its VHS, over time, VHS improvements caught up and then eventually advanced to its present development. VHS is still widely marketed until now inspite of the advent of the DVD technology, but Beta, on the other hand, has long been forgotten.

We'll just watch and see. For sure Sony learned its lesson, so it won't repeat the same blunder. On the other hand, JVC has grown to become a formidable rival. It is still early to say which one will prevail over the other. It is also posssible that a third or even fourth technology will emerge from out of the blue. All for the benefit of the consumers.

The question that remains is: why can't these manufacturers work towards compatibilities between their products? We all know that they caN do that if they want.

ana aya ti diperansya na ti Blu Ray ken tay regular nga technology nga adda kadagiti DVD players ita? kasi nagngina tay unit ti Sony nga Blu Ray. $1,000. tapos isu pay ti nangpangina tay Playstation 3 iti Sony (expected price is $600) gapu ta adda Blu Ray technology na.

Ti diperensiya da gayyem, ket tay makunkuna nga HIGH DEFINITION. Siempre, ti regular nga DVD ket dakkel nga improvement manipud VHS - makitam met nga talaga. Ngem saan pay nga high definition ti regular DVD. Ti Blu Ray ken HD-DVD ti makuna nga high definition ket madlawmo nga talaga ta kasla dimo makita dagiti linya dita screen gapu iti kina-pino da, kasta met dagiti kolors ta kasla agandap da. Pagsayaatanna dagiti Blu Ray ken HD-DVD equipments ket backwards compatible da. Mabalinmo nga i-play dayta regular DVD disc mo kanyada and they will upconvert it into a 1080i/1080p resolution. Aint that cool :!: :?:

But bear in mind, these two technologies, or shall I say formats, namely the Blu Ray and the HD-DVD are not compatible with each other. I'd like to simplify that for the uninitiated: A Blu Ray disc cannot be played in a HD DVD equipment and a HD DVD disc cannot be played in a Blu Ray equipment. They are entirely different from each other. Blu Ray is by Sony and as far as I know, Samsung and Panasonic are into it. HD-DVD is by Toshiba and I have yet to see if any other electronic companies have franchise to it. There are now a few movies produced in these two formats - slightly more expensive than regular DVDs.

I agree apo dags.

Nu ti kayat mo ket blu-ray player, buy the PS3 as it is by far the cheapest blu-ray player out there. Adda pay game console mo nukuan.

Some people buy the PS3 just because of the Blu-ray feature but I think it's still premature to assume that Blu-ray will eventually win the format war. What if in the end, HD-DVD emerges as the format of choice? It can happen after all, Sony has been at the losing end of the format war before. I think Microsoft is supporting HD-DVD so I would imagine that the next XBox will be HD-DVD player capable.

By the way, in order to experience the High-Def feature of the Blu-ray/HD-DVD/PS3, you must have a High-Def capable TV

If the expected price of a PS3 is 600 bucks according to Cupid, then a unit from Toshiba for its HD DVD at 500 bucks is more appealing. The said unit is Toshiba HD-A2. Log on to www.crutchfield.com

Okay, seems like Sony is winning the war.
Blu-ray discs outsold HD-DVD 2:1, but that was after the release of PS3.
I'm betting HD-DVD will catch up when Microsoft releases the next gen XBox which will come with an HD-DVD Player.

But as it stands, Sony is ahead right now.

AM BROWSING A CIRCUIT CITY FLYER RIGHT NOW AND HERE IS A SONY BLU RAY DISC PLAYER WITH A PRICE TAG OF 800USD AFTER A 200USD PRICE BREAK. IT IS NOT INDICATED WHAT CAPABILITIES IT CAN DO.

ON THE HD DVD SIDE, HERE'S A TOSHIBA AT 300USD AFTER A 100USD REDUCTION. IT SAYS, IT DELIVERS STUNNING VIDEO WITH 1080i/720p OUTPUT, PLAYS HD DVDs AS WELL AS DVD, DVD-R/-RW, CD AND CD-R/-RW FORMATS, UPSCALES STANDARD DVDs TO 1081i/720p, ETHERNET CONNECTION, HDMI OUTPUT.

LOOKING AT THE DIFFERENCE IN PRICES, I FOR ONE IS MORE INCLINED TO GET THE TOSHIBA FOR OBVIOUS REASONS. CLEARLY, TOSHIBA IS TRYING TO OUTSELL SONY ON THIS REGARD. COULD THIS BE ANOTHER STRATEGY THAT PUTS SONY TO A DISADVANTAGE?

that is the main reason why i got my Playstation 3. for the price you pay, you get more than just a gaming console. it is also capable of playing true hd quality (1080p) discs and can browse the internet. and sony just slashed the PS3's price by $100 (at least temporarilly).

The latest development on this format war:

Sony has emerged as the winner. Toshiba has given up the fight and movie productions for HD DVD will inevitably be discontinued. Am sure there were many people who invested their money for HD DVD because the equipments were priced lower than the blu ray and are now left in the cold. Well, they can still use their machines to upconvert regular DVD discs.

Postscript
A few of the latest desktop computers have come out with a hybrid player that plays both Blu Ray and HD DVD movies and you can hook it up to the big HD screen via HDMI.

Right now the price of the Toshiba HD DVD A20 is 120 USD while a Sony or Samsung Blu Ray DVD is 399 USD. At this point in time, it is still tempting to get that Toshiba machine because of the price.

Apo daguerrson, if you are considering a blu-ray player, the most future-proof player out there is the PS3. I have one and I absolutely love it.

Although I was rooting for the HD-DVD format, I have to admit that Sony got it right with the PS3. Because of all the features, people will realize that the PS3 is the cheaper than the XBox 360 or any other blu-ray player on the market today.

You're absolutely right, apo gr8-one, the PS3 is the best option right now because of its dual functions, a blu-ray player and as a gamer. I'm not sure however if it can upconvert a regular DVD movie.

I am still trying to figure out my options before getting a high definition player. What these machines in the market lack right now is a built-in digital TV tuner. I wish they could also incorporate that in future models.

I got this Mitsubishi DLP TV 4 years ago when these HD DVD and BluRay DVDs were still unheard of. And it's got 1080i format in it. My problem now is I cannot hitch a BluRay unit with it because the BluRay has 1080p format which is totally incompatible. Has anyone heard of any adaptor that can bridge the gap between these two formats? I need one.

I have to elucidate further the presumption that I have said above, namely the incompatibility between a BluRay player and a 1080i TV. Since the BluRay is essentially a 1080p, (the suffix letter p, by the way means progressive, and the i means interlaced, referring to the way the pictures are scanned in these respective formats), I thought the BluRay disc would be unplayable in a 1080i TV. I was wrong. It can be played, although not as spectacular as in a 1080p TV.

Now, if you are shopping for a TV these days, be sure it is HD ready, otherwise it will not be operational as is, in the US after February 17, 2009. That's when the shift from analog to digital broadcast will take effect. Also, be sure the TV you are gonna buy is 1080p and has a HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) input in it. It does not matter if it is at the back or in front as long as it is there. That is the best connection for the BluRay player. Also, if you are considering to buy an amplifier/receiver, be sure it has input and output assignable HDMI . The more, the better for expansive applications later on. This will give your BluRay a 5.1 or 7.1 sound depending on the capability of the amplifier/receiver. Of course you have to have the corresponding speakers too, to be strategically placed in your audio-video room, or sala if you want it there.

My recent trip to Sams Club has confirmed my opinion many months ago that BluRay disc players will eventually get cheaper as the availability of the machine under several trade marks will flourish into the market. I just saw a BD player with the Philips brand costing under 100 bucks. And it has several cool features that can enhance its usefulness. One of which is it's ability to access the internet via wi-fi.

Ain't that cool?

There's a new tech along the audio-video line called 3D, or to spell it out three-dimensional listening and viewing. It necessitates that your TV is 3D capable, your speakers are 4/1 or 5/1 configured and your bluray player too. I just hope the bluray machine can be upgraded via firmware update from the internet. I haven't sat long enough at the Best Buy store yet to see how big the difference between a regular bluray and a 3D bluray. But as far as I'm concerned, it's no big deal.
