Opposition to bare bets in road show
By Efren L. Danao, Senior Reporter
Various opposition parties on Wednesday will devise a common platform of government among their presidential aspirants, Sen. Edgardo Angara said Saturday.
The aspirants will define their stand on vital issues in what is described as ?road show? that will take them to key cities throughout the country.
Angara, national president of Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino, endorsed the road show, a brainchild of Sen. Aquilino Pimentel Jr., to enable all opposition parties to come up with common principles and objectives and to feel the pulse of the grassroots. Angara is leading the fielding of a common presidential candidate by all opposition parties.
The first stop Wednesday is Laoag City, the regional capital of Northern Luzon, followed by Baguio City a day later.
The road show will also tour the cities of Manila, Cebu, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro and Davao, although the schedule has not yet been firmed up by the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino, which is serving as the secretariat.
The declared presidential candidates of the opposition are Sen. Panfilo Lacson of the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino, Pimentel Jr. of PDP-Laban and independent Sen. Gregorio Honasan III.
The businessman Eduardo Cojuangco Jr. of the Nationalist People?s Coalition appears to have lost interest in the presidency and is not expected to join the road show. Sen. Noli de Castro still has to decide whether to run for a higher post, and under which banner, the administration or the opposition.
The action king Fernando Poe Jr., who is being wooed to join the opposition pool of presidential aspirants, has kept mum about his plans. He is also not expected to join the Laoag and Baguio stop, although Sen. Vicente Sotto III said Poe would be asked to join later should he eventually take the plunge.
Pimentel said the road show would be a vehicle for all opposition parties to devise common principles and objectives.
?The opposition should unite only on the basis of principles, not because a candidate has more money or is more popular,? he said.
