my 2 cents:

di dak met kagurgura :D ...ngem diak met kagurgura ni Philippine boxer Manny P. but I just don't consider him as a hero, because he promotes alcoholic drink liquor. I think he just wants your money. He does not care about you. Heroes care about people!

But this is definitely true...he is a great athlete and I?m so proud of him I recognized him as one of today's best fighters.

i'll take a shot. right now he is popular. from an executive's point of view, he is the shepherd and the fans who adore him are the sheep. he is so popular that he can easily influence the customers' purchasing decisions. his popularity can bring instant brand recognition, credibility, and PR. marketing management realizes this, thus they want to cash in his popularity.

as far as Manny being regarded as a hero, that i have to disagree. he is an accomplished athlete no doubt about that. he has helped fellow poor pinoys by giving them money. this may have sustained their basic needs, but not enough to permanently solve their poverty nor significantly change their quality of life. has he made a significant impact on someone else's life? to his immidiate family yes, but to the rest of the pinoys maybe, such as aspiring boxers who want to attain the same fame and status. he put the country back in the boxing world map, but this is not new. this has already been accomplished by a few boxers in the past, but they were never regarded as heroes. so why start with Manny now? what is the purpose of these "kodak" moments with the president? ahhhhh....i know. the president's main motive behind this is merely a publicity stunt. it is just pure PR.

First of all, let's define a hero. According to Webster's dictionary, a hero is a man of distinguised courage or ability admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. Based from this definition, someone's hero is subjective. When I was young and still in the Philippines, my heroes are like Rizal, Bonifacio, Mabini, Antonio Luna, etc. They died fighting for our rights. When I came here in U.S., I heard the word hero being applied to athletes. I feel then that the word hero has been trivialized. I can not accept then that sport figures being idolized as heroes. And then Cory Aquino in her effort to honor OCWs (I was one of the OCWs at that time) she declared them as heroes. So I feel that the word hero is now being used for ordinary deeds. My additional definition of hero is timeless brave and noble deeds, and transcends from generation to generation.

Going back to Manny Pacquiao, in my opinion, it is still early to tell if he is a hero or not. If he continues on winning and becomes the number one pound for pound boxer in the world then he will definitely be a hero in boxing world only. If during and after his boxing days, he continues to be popular and continues to help a lot of people then he can be hero in the true sense of the word.

Tocuh, I agree most of what you said. But drinking is not bad per se as long as it is done in moderation. What is bad is people drinking it excessively and most male Pinoy are like that. That is why you said Manny P. does not care about them. For me, I only drink occasionally only when I feel like it on parties.

Yeah, perhaps in the long run, in addition to several factors it might lead to some health problems. But that is similar to consuming food with high colesterol. I'm glad that somebody is thinking the same way that I do that the tenants in Malacanang are just riding on Manny Pacquiao's popularity. Actually, it is deversionary tactics on their part. Malacanang wants any kind of explosive news to block and to sway away people's mind from the Garci tapes. All those discussions regarding Cha-Cha are just all diversionary tactics.

on topic * Manny as a Hero.... I heard that wars being fought by insurgents and the government in Mindanao and other places are at a ceasefire because of Manny Pacquiao`s fight. So in essence, his matches brings the "whole" country to a certain peace. If he and his boxing matches can spare many lives for just a day or two and stop guns being fired to other people, then to some point, I think that is a form of heroism (not 100% altruistic but nevertheless, Peace is still peace). Now, if he can just do that 24/7 and always win heheheheh....

As to his English, give the man a break! Oo nga at baluktot, at least he has the guts to express himself in foreign language so that other people (or most people all over the world) would understand him. I have met so many people who, in the fear of committing mistakes, shun English. Sure he could have just answered the questions in Tagalog, but then, aren`t we taught in school that if the question is in English, we answer in English? Geez weez even expats who have lived for so long in America don`t speak straight English. Even Americans are not that grammatically correct sometimes.
